INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Do you need to adopt all the features of
an author's style? Why or why not?
2. For this exercise, identify one passage
from a work by an author you really
admire for their writing. Copy
the passage below. Explain what
particular feature(s) of this passage
you find attractive. Explain how the author
was able to achieve this effect. What did
the author do that made this passage
special? (i.e. Did the passage or the effect
have a particular function? [Inclusive 'or']
Did both the effect and 'the tools' used
serve its purpose? Were the tools
effective?) What can you infer about
the general style of the author based upon
this sample? Generally, in what contexts
would 'the tools' used be effective?
Provide examples.
NB: I apologize to those who would like to choose an author who did not write in English. You may, however, use a translation but then you would be as much about the style of translation of the author. I look forward to reading your responses.
